The Mariposa Chor was born in the summer of 2018 following a vernissage at the Bayouma Haus, the intercultural center of AWO Berlin Spree-Wuhle in Berlin Friedrichshain. The idea emerged after Margot Chatard, the choir director, had one too many drinks and started singing some of their favorite tunes and mentioned how much they'd love to start a choir. Belinda, the choir’s guardian angel and director of the Frauenprojekt Mariposa, offered the Bayouma Haus as the choir’s headquarters, and just like that, plans were set in motion. On July 7, 2018, we had our very first rehearsal.
Our early concerts were held at the Bayouma Haus. We love performing “at home” bringing friends and family together in the heart of this intercultural community center. In 2019, we had the honor of singing at the Freie Universität for the Global History Master program, and in winter we sang at the Santa Lucia Weihnachtsmarkt.
Navigating the pandemic wasn’t easy, but we followed the safety guidelines from the Chorverband Berlin e.V. and kept our distance. When possible, we met outdoors, including at a special spot in Stadtpark Lichtenberg near the bear statues, which became our open-air rehearsal and performance space.
As a feminist choir, we proudly participate in the March 8th demonstrations in Berlin, where we sing our protest songs with passion and power. In 2022, we celebrated our Italian roots at the Liberazione Berlinese event in Prenzlauer Berg, and in 2023, we participated to the Italian Street Food Festival’s winter edition.
In June 2024, we performed at a festival organized by Jineology Berlin, and later collaborated with them to organize a second festival in November. We also sang at the Fest für Alle in Lichtenberg’s Freia Platz, where we connected with other local organizations. We are especially grateful to the event’s organizer, the Stadtteilkoordinatorin, who even put herself at risk to make the festival happen!
We were also invited to participate in the Gedenkfeier organized by the Bezirksamt Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg at the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in 2024 and 2025. It was a deeply moving experience, witnessing how people from different religious and non-religious backgrounds came together to honor the lives of those in our neighborhood.
In January 2025, after years of struggling with too few members to truly be considered a choir, the Mariposa Chor made the decision to rebrand as the Mariposa Voices.
And now, we’re looking for new voices! If you love to sing and want to be part of a vibrant and empowering community, come join us!
